Gavin’s words: “I love you…”

Gavin has been talking so much and he surprises us with words that he says.  Here are some conversations that I love to cherish.

—-

One evening, when we came home from work and school, Gavin saw  pack of juice when I opened the fridge.

G:  “Can [I] have some juice, please, mommy?”

M:  “Only after dinner.”

Gavin, even though there wasn’t any food on the table, pulled his chair and sat on it.  He had to get down since I was still fixing a salad and the fish was still in the oven.  Finally, when food was ready, he once again climbed up his chair and said,

G:  “Let’s pray!!!”

He grabbed our hands and said started leading us in prayer, which was his first time doing it and said,

G:  “Dear God, thank you for our food.”  Then looked at King and said “Daddy made this.”  Then looked at me and said, “Mommy made this. Amen!”

He ate the cucumber-cantaloupe mint salad and a couple bites of fish and said again “Can I have some juice?”.

——–

One night last week as King and I were getting him ready for bed, Gavin was very affectionate.  He is normally very cuddly but lately he’s been wanting us to stay with him in his bedroom as long as he can ask us to.  And he give us lots of compliments wtih lots of hugs and kisses to go with it.  One night he told me, “Mommy, I wub you!”  He saw me smile and said I love you back.  Then he goes on saying, “No more time-outs?” Ha!

——

Another night as he was trying to get ready to sleep, he once again got very affectionate.  After all the I love yous he started a conversation which we generally have over dinner:

G:  “What made you sad mommy?”

M:  “What made YOU sad?

G:  “Coz I miss[ed] mommy.”

Del Mar Fair 2011

Every year around my birthday, we go to the Del Mar Fair.  Yes, Del Mar Fair, not San Diego County fair.  I only missed it one year since I’ve lived here in San Diego.  That summer felt a little off missing it.  So we went this year strategically with family and friends to share all the fried food we planned on trying.  It wasn’t too hot so we had a good time.

Here’s Gavin waiting for us to finish eating.

Gavin’s lola took him out to see the fountain while we continue to eat.

Look how big the turkey leg that Kathy was working on.

Gavin wanted some of Xavier’s chocolate ice cream so King got Gavin some.  King ate most of it though.

Our family picture.

Thumbs up for a good time!

A table full of fried food!  This year, the new thing was fried kool-aid.  Nothing too exciting.  Just kool-aid flavored donuts that are dense.  My favorite is still the fried klondike bar.

This year’s theme is “Race to the Fair”.  King and Gavin enjoyed checking out the classic cars.

Lastly, same spot, different years:

The game that started it all

Watching baseball is now a yearly tradition for us to do as a Father’s day activity.  This year we planned to picnic at the park and we asked our friends, the B family to join us.  Fortunately our schedules worked out so we enjoyed one Saturday evening watching the Padres play against the Nationals.

We were so early at the game because King wanted prime parking and a good spot at the park.  So early, meaning we were inside the park an hour before the game started!  King watched the players warm up before the game yelling at them to throw us a ball.  Then King and Gavin played catch for a little bit.

Then the B family arrived.  It was great to catch up with them since it has been a long time since we’ve seen each other.  The boys were still babies.  Now they are little toddlers running around the park.

We had a great time.  Since this game, Gavin has been obsessed with baseball.  He’s been wearing the baseball helmet again.  Some nights he’d be sleeping with this baseball hat, bat, gloves and ball.  It is pretty amusing how he really got into the sport.

It was indeed a fun way to celebrate father’s day.  I enjoyed seeing my boys enjoy the experience.

Whales, dolphins and turtles at Seaworld

We had a 2 day pass to Seaworld that was about to expire by the end of June.  So to celebrate father’s day, we used our pass to visit Seaworld.

Gavin was excited though I don’t think he remembered what he was about to see again.  First an otter greeted us.  You can tell I am so excited just entering Seaworld because I can’t wait to see Gavin’s reactions but he was just nonchalant when he saw the otter.

We saw the whales playing in their big pool then we went to look for “Dory” and “Sharkbait” to the acquarium.  We saw Dory but not sharkbait.

After the aquarium, King picked up a starfish to show Gavin but Gavin said “ewww, that’s dirty!!”.

Then we watched the dolphin show which was surprisingly spectacular. Yes, they even got people doing acrobats and birds being a part of the show.

Then we went to the boring Shamu show.  They don’t even have the trainers in the water anymore.

But a little tickle brings out the laughter from Gavin.

Then for lunch, we had our “baon” and picnicked outside the park.  We are not big fans of theme park foods.  Gavin’s eyes opened wide when he saw the “Cars” brown bag as it is his two most favorite things:  cars and food!

After eating lunch, while King got a cup of coffee, Gavin went shopping.

Then he found what to purchase!

And the rest is history…

After playing baseball, we were ready to cool off so we headed to see the penguins.

Then more cooling off to see a couple polar bears and baby beluga whales.

It was actually the first day for a new turtle exhibit at Seaworld called “Turtle Reef”.  We lucked out to walk in before a big wave of people lined up to enter the exhibit.  The reef was very colorful and the turtles swimming over you was a cool experience.

Before we left, we just had to say bye to the whales.  Gavin had a great time and so did King and I.

Gavin’s first Legoland experience

We had the G family visiting Legoland last Saturday and we looked forward to meeting them there.  They had quite a drive to go so we decided to be there when the park opens so Gavin can nap in the afternoon and come back just before evening.  We first hit Duplo land which was a huge playground for Gavin.  He immediately wanted to ride on the train and enjoyed every second of it.

Then we started to hit the rides.  Gavin was just a little under 34″ which was the minimum height to some of their rides.

King just went in line with him anyways.  I told King to make Gavin tiptoe ;)   King was trying to hold him up a little bit but the attendant noticed and asked King to let go of Gavin.  With him standing straight, the attendant at least thought we has tall enough.  So they rode their first ride.  Gavin was soooo excited!  And of course so was King and I to see Gavin’s face.

Then there was a driving opportunity for Gavin.

Then another flying experience for Gavin.

Then a boat ride.

There was this explorer sitting next to jaws.  Both of which Gavin had to take a photo with.

It was already around 1:30pm so we took a snack break before heading out for a nap.  For snack, a yummy banana and the must try apple fries.

We actually left the park so Gavin can fall asleep as we drove around the coast and Encinitas.  Then King parked the car at the outlet store mall while I shopped :)

When we got back to Legoland, King helped Gavin build a car.  King just had as much fun as Gavin building a car.

Then they got to race the car.

After colliding with a big car, Gavin did not want to race anymore.  He just held his race car tight and close, watching the other races.

After this experience, we got to see the G family.  Gavin was shy with Kuya J at first.

Then we went to go to the boat ride.  It was Gavin’s second time on this.

Kuya J is now a very big boy.  Notice Kathy checking in on facebook as X manuevers the boat.

The kids just had so much fun together.

We all had a great time.

It was also great catching up the G family and Kathy & X & Bing too.  This meant a late dinner for us.  Very late, we ate at 9:00pm.  All the kids were so hungry but we were able to enjoy a great big pizookie at BJs.  Gavin tried so hard to stay up to play with the first lego set we bought him.  He passed out in the car though.  Funny thing was throught the night, he kept waking up asking for his lego toy.  At 3 in the morning, we just moved him on the floor and he slept holding the box of legos he got.

Gavin’s words: “two is too much”

This morning, Gavin did not want to leave our house to go to school because he wanted to play with his new legos. It’s new to him because I just got them out of the package for him to play last night. In an attempt to rebel, he did not want to put his shoes on. King was able to convince him but insisted to only wear one shoe. He went on and said “two [shoes] is too much.” So he wore one shoe on the drive to school and walked in to his class with one shoe. He apparently just wanted to wear one shoe.

In memoriam Maricel Maloloy-on Perez

I don’t understand.  She was healthy.  She was full of life.  It was only a lump.  It was only Stage 1.   She was cancer free last Christmas.  She survived the critical surgery.  We were hopeful.  She was only 37.  Even the oncologist was puzzled.  Nothing makes sense to me.  All these make this situation the more reason why I believe she is in God’s hands.

I returned and saw under the sun that—
The race is not to the swift,
Nor the battle to the strong,
Nor bread to the wise,
Nor riches to men of understanding,
Nor favor to men of skill;
But time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11

Part of me thinks it’s unfair but then again, unfair from what?  There is no suffering for her now.  No more tears, no more chemo, no more pain.  She is in a better place.  With gratitude I accept Cel has received her ultimate healing.  However, my heart grieves as I miss her terribly and saddened I won’t be seeing her here in San Diego this year as I looked forward to.

It was an honor to be a part of her life.  It was a gift that she was a part of ours.

Happy 2nd birthday Gavin!

Dear Gavin,

Wow, did time fly this year!  You are now 2.  This year was filled with some fun memories.  Here are 12 things about you this year:

  1. We got to see you walk your first steps and looked forward to the second and third time you walked.  We thought it was the most exciting thing. Of course now, all you want to do is run and we’re only trying to keep up.
  2. When you learned to jump, all you did that week was jump.  You’re dad was particularly excited that your feet actually do get off the ground when you jump.
  3. Now you’re talking and talking a lot.  It took you a really, really long time to call me “mama”.  You already knew to call “daddy”, “bahbah” for Barbara your teacher, “hedy” and even “kathy” whom you seldom saw at that time.  It was as though you were just teasing me since you already knew a lot of words.  So when you finally called me, “mama”, it made my heart melt.  Then a few months later, you called me “mommy” and out of the blue started calling me “mom”, saying “Thanks, mom.” when thanking me.  You sound like a big boy now sometimes.
  4. Last December, a few mornings you busted out counting from 1 to 11.  However lately, you’ve lost the sequence and count “1, 3, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15″ instead.  Sometimes you throw in a “quatro” or “ocho” in there as well, something you picked up from watching a lot of Dora during our trip to the Philippines.
  5. Favorite foods?  Well, let’s just say you love to eat.  That makes me really happy.  You love fruits especially oranges.  You can finish 2 in one sitting and all that are left are the rinds.  You also love strawberries, blueberries and especially blackberries.  You love bananas too.  You can also tolerate spicy food and enjoy some of it.  When you discovered mangoes, you can spot it from a distance.  You love pastas, pizza, quesadillas, tacos and many many more.
  6. You love to dance.  When you hear music, you start shaking your shoulders or you whole body.  That never fails to entertain your grandparents.
  7. As for toys, you love cars.  You also love the movie Cars and Lightning McQueen and Mater.  You were extremely excited when you saw them in California Adventure when we went last December.  A lot of your toys have or are lightning mcQueen.  However since last Christmas, you got spoiled by your grandparents and aunties and got a bunch of Thomas the train toys.  You know your different matchbox cars.  You also know the different Cars character.  Your favorite seems to be Mater.  Now, you also know Thomas and his friends.  Other than Thomas, you really like Gordon and wanted that for your birthday.
  8. You love shoes.  I don’t know where you get it from.  You have no problems wearing them and insist on picking the shoe to wear every morning.  You can also get picky on clothes telling us you like the “nice shirt” or the “monkey shirt”.  You most especially like wearing your football jersey.
  9. We went to the Philippines this year.  That was an interesting experience.  We brought so much stuff with us including “fresh” milk to last 18 days.  I’ll post a separate blog on our trip.  You got to play out on the streets of Novaliches, ate mangoes, rode tricycles and called coconut trees “chocolate trees”.  We had a great time introducing you to families.
  10. Last fall, you started using your big boy bed.  I was really sad because you didn’t even want to cuddle with me before going to bed.  After brushing your teeth, you rush to your bed and are ready for your bedtimes prayers.  Then I tuck you in, leave you and in a few minutes you are sleeping soundly.
  11. You used to suck you thumb and took you only less than two months to not even do it even in your sleep.  We truly admire your self-control and could not be any more proud.
  12. Before going to bed, we say our prayers.  I start your turn with “Thank you Jesus for..” and you say Mommy, Daddy, Gavin and whomever or whatever you saw or did that day like lola or grandma, grandpa or  you start enumerating your toys.  You sometimes are thankful for the sky, the light and difference letters.

It was a great year with you Gavin and we look forward to many more years with you.

Love,

Mommy

Outside & the journey to stop thumbsucking

It was Dec 31st and we were driving to the grocery store.  Gavin typically sucks his thumb as he watches everything outside the car as we drive along.  Out of the blue, King said, “Gavin, how about if you stop sucking your thumb for your new year’s resolution?  Just do this instead..” King showed a motion of his hands, a way to keep Gavin’s hand occupied from sucking.   Gavin followed the motions and said, “this?”.  King said, “yeah, just keep doing that.”  So Gavin did just this till we got to the store, in the store and our drive back.  From the rear view mirror,  could see him put his thumb by his mouth then stop to play with his hands intead.  He did very well so we kept it up for naptime and bedtime that day.  Then he did well over days and now it’s been a few weeks.  His bedtime moved an hour later for a couple weeks because he gets so restless from not being able to suck his thumb.  I felt guilty from depriving him of his comfort at the same time so proud of his self-control.  The only times we see him suck his thumb was when sleeping especially right before sleeping.  He is honest enough to admit he still sucks his thumb.  However, this past week, he makes us leave his room when he is ready to go to bed.  He tells us “Mommy/Daddy, outside.”  Then I say, “How about Gavin?”.   He responds, “Gavin, night-night.”  He also then says, “Mommy hug.  Daddy hug.” so we could leave him alone soon.  As soon as we walk out the door, we see him through the monitor, sucking his thumb.  I cannot believe that he makes us leave his room.  He’s not even two.  I’m not ready for this!  So Gavin goes to bed, and King & I, just watch him from outside his bedroom.  Our baby is now a little big boy.

Words of the week

Gavin has been surprising us with the words he’s been saying lately.  This week he had a few words that caught us by surprise:

Music -  On our drive back from daycare, I had the radio turned off.  Just as we left the school’s parking lot, Gavin said, “I want music.”  I was like, “Really?  What do you want to listen?”.  He said “buhbee” for the Bumble Bee song.  As soon as the song started, he had a big smile and said “Buhbee”.

Happy – Gavin was banging his Thomas train on the table so I told him to stop doing it because Thomas will be sad.  Gavin picked up the train, looked at Thomas’ smiling face and said, “Ah, Thomas happy!”  What can I say?

Yesterday – I don’t know if he truly knows what this word means but he definitely knows to use it in context.  We’ve been working on stopping his thumbsuckng habit.  In the mornings when I see him in bed I ask him if he sucked his thumb.  One morning he answered, “Ah suck it yet-ter-day!”

This was a picture taken last Friday night at TGI Fridays.
